Porticos in Doric architecture

Portico is a term derived from Italian word ‘porch’. Porticos are walkways covered and roofed. Columns are widely used to hold porticos. The origin of porticos is Greece. However, these were widely used by Romans in the ancient age. Porticos are famous in Italy. In fact the country is popular for porticos and the variety of covered porch design available here. You can find porticos in Doric architecture in other countries such as England and the United States. Porticos can be added to backyards and front side of a home in order for enhancing the overall look of a living space.

One of the classic examples of a portico is available in London, University College of England. This building was designed in the year 1827 by J.P. Gandy Deering and William Wilkins. This is a representation of Greek revival architecture in beautiful Corinthian style. This style of architecture was popular in mid eighteenth century in England.
