GlobusXIO is the eXtensible Input/Output (XIO) framework in the Globus Toolkit. It provides a simple and intuitive abstraction layer to runtime loadable IO implementations. We begin with an overview of GlobusXIO, how it works, advantages it provides, and why/when it is a good choice. Next, we provide simple example use cases as well as real world use cases of GlobusXIO. We will then begin a high level overview of XIO development. This will start with a brief overview of asynchronous programming concepts but most of the time will be spent on the XIO user API and how to create applications that take advantage of its functionality. Finally we will discuss driver development and how to quickly create a protocol driver using an existing 3rd party library.
