SB17:  Virtualized and On-Demand Network Support for Grid and Service-Oriented Computing Models
09/13/2006, 4:00 PM - 4:45 PM

Speaker:
Nino Vidovic, VP, Cisco Systems, Inc.

In last couple of decades computing models evolved from mainframe to 2-tier client/server into n-tier distributed computing. Grid and service-oriented computing models are representatives of this new emerging trend, targeting verticals such as life sciences (bioinformatics, drug discovery), energy (gas and oil exploration), manufacturing (simulation, partner collaboration), financial (portfolio risk analysis) and government and R&D (service utilities).

To take full advantage of this new computing models, data center as well as enterprise-wide IT infrastructure need to be capable of supporting internal enterprise-wide grids and finally external grids that serve customers on a global scale. This could be achieved only if all IT resources including enterprise-wide networks are virtualized and represented as managed resources.

Abstracting and virtualizing network resources via standard web services allows grid applications to directly request provisioning, monitoring and scheduling of network resources and services on-demand.

Cisco's On-demand Grid Network Solution (OGNS) combines the capabilities of a network management system (NMS) with the Globus Grid middleware (GT4 version) to provide a framework for deploying and managing application grids.
