There is a need for co-management of Grid and network resources and services for effective deployment of Grids over networks spanning LAN, Enterprise campus LAN, MAN and WAN. The Cisco On-demand Grid Network Solution (OGNS), which combines the power of a network management system (NMS) with the Globus Grid middleware (GT4 version), provides a framework for such co-management. The use of an NMS with its support for FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, and Security) management is key to successful deployment of Grids in existing, operating, commercial, and heterogeneous networks. With the aid of the OGNS, Grid systems can request provisioning, monitoring and scheduling of network resources and services on-demand. The OGNS provides (WSRF-based) north-bound network service interfaces (NBNSI) that expose abstracted and virtualized network resources and services to clients. Abstraction and virtualization hide network details, such as types of network, network level topology, network features, and network domains, thus shielding Grid systems from the complexity and changes in underlying networks.
